An outdoor AP should be configured and tested at ground level before mounting. Exact PoE, ports, antennas and weather protection depend on the model.

Ethernet first
Use a tested LAN run from the router or switch to the correct PoE data path.

Design the outdoor AP before mounting hardware
AP mode uses Ethernet as the network backhaul and the outdoor device as the WiFi access point. It avoids sacrificing radio capacity to a wireless repeater hop, but it requires correct cabling, PoE and upstream DHCP. Identify the complete model suffix, port speed, antenna pattern, IP rating and accepted power method.
Plan the client area, cable route, dry indoor position for the power equipment, surge protection and management method. Outdoor distance claims assume favourable conditions; design for two-way client communication rather than the strongest possible downlink.
Bench-configure the access point at ground level
- Attach the documented antennas and seals without permanently closing the enclosure.
- Connect router or switch LAN to the injector’s LAN/Data In port.
- Connect the injector’s PoE/Data + Power port to the outdoor unit.
- Power the correct injector or verified 802.3af/at switch.
- Join the setup WiFi or use the documented local Ethernet method.
- Open the label-supported hostname or gateway and select AP mode.
- Create secured 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs, then save and reboot.
Verify DHCP, internet and management access
Connect a phone to the outdoor SSID and confirm it receives an address from the intended upstream router. Load unrelated websites, test both required bands and record the assigned management IP from the router client list. If clients connect without internet, test the Ethernet cable directly and check upstream DHCP or MAC filtering.
Expected result: The outdoor unit bridges wireless clients to the existing LAN without creating an unintended second router or subnet.
Mount, seal and test again at installation height
Keep the PoE injector and power adapter dry unless their own ratings explicitly allow exposure. Use outdoor-rated cable, drip loops, sealed cable entries and appropriate grounding or surge measures. Maintain clearance from metal surfaces and do not bundle antennas against a pole.
After mounting, repeat the client, Ethernet, internet and management tests. If nearby clients struggle to transmit back, reduce height or change antenna orientation. A high-gain outdoor radio can hear differently from a low-power phone or camera.
Use AP mode without creating an unintended open network
Choose WPA2 or WPA3 according to model and client compatibility, use a unique password and disable unused guest or open SSIDs. The upstream router normally remains responsible for DHCP, internet access and firewall policy. Avoid enabling Router mode merely because it is available; that can create a second subnet.
For cameras or gates, consider segmentation on the controlling router where available. Record the SSID, management IP, cable route and PoE source so later maintenance does not require guessing.
Inspect the outdoor installation after weather and cable changes
Periodically check cable jackets, drip loops, seals, mounting hardware and grounding provisions. A failure after rain or heat may indicate moisture, cable damage or power instability rather than a wireless setting. Inspect the physical path before resetting.
Before firmware work, record the full model and hardware revision. Use stable power and an official file for that revision; never apply firmware from a visually similar outdoor unit.

Outdoor AP installation questions
Is the PoE injector waterproof?
Do not assume it is. Official outdoor product guidance states that power adapters and PoE boxes may need to remain dry indoors.
Is AP mode better than outdoor repeater mode?
AP mode with Ethernet backhaul is generally more predictable where cabling is available. Repeater mode depends on a stable wireless return path.
Can every WAVLINK outdoor model use the same PoE source?
No. Confirm active 802.3af/at or the exact passive voltage for the full model and hardware revision.
