WiFi Extender Setup Glossary

Use these definitions while following the setup and troubleshooting guides. Product manuals may use slightly different labels for the same function.

Administrator password

Credential used to open and change the extender’s local settings. It is not necessarily the WiFi password.

Access Point (AP)

A device that creates WiFi from a wired Ethernet connection to the main router.

Default gateway

The local IP address through which a connected device reaches the router or extender management interface.

DHCP

The service that automatically gives local IP addresses to connected devices.

Firmware

Software stored inside the extender that controls its features, security and web interface.

Mesh extender

A compatible node participating in a coordinated mesh system rather than an ordinary independent repeater.

Repeater mode

A mode that receives the router signal wirelessly and rebroadcasts it.

Router mode

A mode in which the device creates and routes a separate network from a modem or upstream connection.

SSID

The name shown in the WiFi network list.

WiFi password

Credential used by wireless devices, or by the extender when joining the router.

WPS

Push-button pairing method supported by some routers and extenders.

2.4 GHz

Longer-reaching WiFi band that is often more congested.

5 GHz

Shorter-reaching band that can offer more capacity under good conditions.

WPA2/WPA3

Wireless security standards used to protect network access.

Client device

A phone, computer, television or other device connected to the router or extender.

Ethernet backhaul

A wired link between an access point and the main router.

Factory reset

An action that erases saved settings and returns the device to its initial configuration.

LAN port

An Ethernet port used for local devices or, on some APs, a wired uplink.

WAN or WAN/LAN port

A port that can accept an upstream internet/router connection in supported modes.

Private IP address

A local address such as 192.168.x.x that is not directly reachable from the public internet.

Roaming

A client device moving its connection between router, extender or mesh access points.

Signal indicator

An LED or status value showing the extender’s router-link quality; meanings vary by model.

MAC address

A hardware network identifier used to recognise the extender in a router client list.

Dual band

Support for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi bands.

How to use this glossary

When a guide asks for the router WiFi password, do not substitute the extender administrator password. When it asks for the gateway, inspect the active network rather than assuming every device uses the same private IP. Mode names are equally important: Repeater uses a wireless uplink, Access Point uses Ethernet, Router creates a routed network and Mesh requires compatible nodes.

Use the exact terminology printed in the model manual when a menu label differs. A firmware update can rename sections without changing the underlying function.
