WAVLINK Access Point Mode Setup Guide

Access Point mode creates WiFi from a wired router connection. It is different from repeater mode because the Ethernet cable—not a wireless uplink—carries traffic back to the router.

When AP mode is the right choice

Use AP mode where Ethernet already reaches the target room or where wireless backhaul is unreliable. A wired uplink generally offers lower latency and more consistent capacity than repeating a weak signal.

Choose the correct port

Port roles vary. A single-port model commonly uses its LAN port for uplink in AP mode, while router-capable models can designate WAN/LAN. Read the label and model guide before connecting the router cable.

Configure AP mode

  1. Connect locally to the device and open its documented setup address.
  2. Select AP or LAN Bridge mode.
  3. Connect the router LAN port to the documented extender uplink port.
  4. Create the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs and strong WiFi password.
  5. Leave DHCP with the main router unless the official design says otherwise.
  6. Save and allow a full reboot.

Find the device after setup

In AP mode, the upstream router often assigns a new IP. Look in the router connected-client list or inspect the gateway/client information. The original factory address may no longer reach the management page.

Expected result: Devices joining the AP receive an IP from the main router and can reach the internet without a second layer of routing.

Avoid common AP problems

  • Cable connected to the wrong port.
  • Router cable damaged or connected to a non-working LAN socket.
  • Device left in Repeater or Router mode.
  • Static IP conflicting with another device.
  • DHCP enabled on both the main router and the extender.

AP security and placement

Use WPA2 or WPA3 where supported, set a unique admin password and position the AP centrally. Because backhaul is wired, placement can prioritise client coverage rather than proximity to the router.

Complete AP-mode verification

Connect one phone to the new AP WiFi and inspect its IP address, gateway and DNS. They should normally belong to the same local subnet as devices connected directly to the main router. If the AP client receives a different subnet unexpectedly, the device may still be in Router mode or running a second DHCP service.

Test access to the internet and, where appropriate, another trusted local device such as a printer. A client that reaches the AP interface but not the internet often indicates the uplink cable is in the wrong port, the router LAN port is disabled or the cable is faulty.

Use the router client list to record the AP’s assigned management IP. Consider a DHCP reservation so it remains easy to find after restarts. Do not force the old factory address once the main router is managing the subnet.

Finally, test in the intended location and check both bands. AP mode does not require proximity to the router, but client coverage still depends on walls, antenna position and interference. Keep the device ventilated and use the strongest supported WPA2/WPA3 configuration.
